简介： 十三世紀後半王朝の挽歌が貴族たちの胸を掠める時、宮廷の後宮に生きた一人の女性の愛欲、人間としてのめざめ、そして自由を求めての出家を描く脚本は詩人の大岡信、監督は「哥」の実相寺昭雄、撮影は中堀正夫がそれぞれ担当 十三世紀後半、都は後嵯峨法皇院政の時代法皇の皇子後深草天皇は、既に帝位を弟の亀山天皇にゆずり、富小路殿に仙洞御所をいとなんでいた。二十歳半ばにして世捨人に等しかったわけである。この院には四条という寵愛する一人の女房がいた。四条はある貴族の家に生まれたが、四歳の時から上皇のもとで育てられ、十代半ばになった時、自らの愛人として仙洞御所に迎え入れた。しかし四条には愛人ができる。かねてから四条を愛している霧の暁(西園寺大納言)、執拗に迫ってついには四条を我ものとする真言密教の高徳の僧阿闍梨(上皇の異腹の弟)である。四条はこれらの男たちの愛を受け、それぞれの子供を生むが、全て彼女の手から奪い取られてしまう。彼女は宮廷社会の美しいもてあそびものとしての、自らのはかない存在を自覚せざるを得なかった。ただ一人、始めは四条を恐怖させ、次第にその荒々しい情熱が彼女の心をとらえるに至ったのは阿闍梨だが、彼は流行病であっけなく死んでしまった。やがて、幼い頃から西行絵巻を好んで眺め、西行のように生きたいと願っていた四条は、自由を求めて出家した。天台、真言の貴族的仏教の世界ではなく、遊行放浪していく踊念仏の世界に対する憧れを持つ四条は、みごとな腕前の画や書、また連歌などを道中の資として、待女目井とともに諸国をめぐって歩いた。数奇を日々の糧とし、真実の愛の荒々しい爆発を抑え、風雅の、あるいはまた政治の世界に没頭している男たちから身をふりほどいて、四条は厳島、熊野、その他日本各地を歩きまわった。王朝の幻影がくずれ去った後の、武士が支配する新しい社会の中で、彼女は目井とも別れて、一人の尼絵師として闊達に生きてゆく。彼女の生んだ娘は、今の帝の娘で高名な歌人となっているらしい。しかし、四条はただ一人、今日も街道の砂埃をまきあげながら歩いている。
